2018 Goals for Expanding Local Food production

Lambi Fund maintains local food production in rural Haiti as a priority in the 2018 goals. Haiti remains a country where food security has become an increasingly challenging goal. Feeding its population of more than 10 million is at best difficult, as imports are increasing and production capacity faces critical issues such as primary and secondary migration, high unemployment, lack of subsidization for the farming communities and increase production that is planned for outside markets.

In 2018, among the portfolio of 38 organizations benefitting from support of the Lambi Fund of Haiti to focus on development and environment efforts, half or 19 are geared to increasing food production in rural areas for local food consumption. The following organizations will focus their effort on:

increasing the number of acres tilled for timely planting (A),
or initiate animal breeding for the purpose of increasing protein intake and create revenue for the animal breeder (B)
and create access to small loans for farmers to increase their staff and have input for the protection of the growing field (D)
transformation of grains (E), and
Storage for grain (F).

OSCED: Increasing the Provision of Food for the Community by Adding a Mill

Oganizasyon Sosyo Kiltirèl ak Ekonomik pou Devlopman (Organization for Social, Cultural and Economic Development, (OSCED) is located in the Dechapèl Corridor in the Artibonite Department in Haiti. OSCED worked in concert with the Lambi Fund field staff for the last nine month to undertake the construction of a mill for cereal transformation. The members of OSCED share our vision of social equality, economic development, self-sufficiency and self-determination to foster development and improve the quality of life in rural Haiti. OSCED was founded in the year 2000 with the goals of helping their members improve their livelihoods. They have worked together with other organizations in the same area to increase revenue, and to highlight and find solutions to environmental degradation occurring in their area.

In partnership, Osced provided the land for the construction of the structure for the mill. Members will participate by collecting local material like stones and sand and pebbles. They will also provide labor, water, transportation of materials while receiving training that will help them maintain the structure. Lambi Fund provides the motor, accesories and tools needed for operations. We will also train managers, record keepers, and committees on purchasing, and local trainers will train operators hands on.

The mill will transform 42,000 pounds of grain per day and will be open 6 hours a day while on market days, it will be open 8 hours. The mill will provide access to transform grains for 149 members of OSCED and the community of Dechapèl Corridor with a population of 33,461. Every farmer will have the option of milling locally.

The project will supports the local economy and provide food security as well as alleviate poverty through assuring economic security for thousands of families. Thus, improving lives through the increase of local production and establishing livelihoods.

COPADET: One Project Expanding Food Production

Our mission is to foster democratic practices and increase opportunity for sustainabilty among rural farmers in Haiti. Towards that the mechanization of the work in the family farms results in expanding of acreage prepared for food productio, more time efficiency in food production and increase capacity to secure food availabilty to the local population. In addition, Lambi Fund assists farmers to transform grains to cereal to avail nutritious intake for all levels of the population.

COPADET, Peasant Cooperative for the Development of Tobeck is a model of improvement in the expansion of food production and its strategies increase opportunity for the community farmer to have revenue producing actiities in a civil society facing a very high rate of unemployment. COPADET is located in the south of Haiti where Hurricane Mathew exceeded a billion dollar in damages on October 4, 2016. The organization partners lost all gardens that were due for harvesting in Novemver of 2016. A four months drought followed where all farmer without acess to irrigation canals lost their december crop and a large crop of corn and a variety of legumeswere lost to an infestation of caterpillar.

The lambi Fund partnered with COPADET to double their effort at securing food [production. We provided four oxen and two plows to double the production for this season. In comparaison to hand tilling, the oxen pulled plow delivers 10 times the speed of labouring and tilling allowing farmers to tripple their revenue. COPADET also availed 10,000 gourdes to 45 of its members to purhase the plowing service nd expand the area planted.

Since the inception of the project in November of 2016, farmers received the loan reimbursed in a timely fashion as they have harvested thousands of marmites(5lbs containers) of beans. Henri, a member of Copadet who, reported for the first time harvest over $3500 of beans sold on the local market. He has since replanted and ready to harvest his second round for the year.

As you supported our first two phases of assistance and partnership post this major event, you were a contributor that made it possible for this population to move quickly to sustain their own efforts in the future. Today, COPADET members are working diligently to keep moving forward as their repayment makes it possible for other members to expand their production.

We are so grateful for the solidarity and help you showed our people. Today COPADET members are back to their production activities moving away from the damaging impact of Hurricane Mathew. THANK YOU.
