Calcutta Rescue (CR) is set to launch an impactful solar panel initiative in Salt Lake's No. 12 slum, aiming to provide sustainable lighting and cooling solutions for households in need. The project envisions the installation of 20-22V solar panels, with the goal of directly benefiting 10 carefully selected families. These families include households with school-going students and elderly members, identified in consultation with community leaders to prioritize those who will gain the most from evening lighting for studies and relief from the region's extreme heat.
As part of this initiative, CR plans to strengthen community capacity by organizing dedicated training sessions on solar panel maintenance. By equipping local residents with the knowledge and skills to manage and maintain the systems, CR aims to ensure the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of the intervention.
While funding constraints have presented challenges to immediate implementation, CR is actively engaged in fundraising efforts to mobilize the necessary resources. In the meantime, non-financial preparatory activities are underway, including community awareness programs and capacity-building sessions, to foster a sense of ownership and readiness among the beneficiaries.
The visible enthusiasm and cooperation within the community serve as powerful motivation for CR to continue its efforts. Through this solar initiative, CR remains committed to promoting sustainable energy solutions that enhance quality of life, support education, and protect the well-being of vulnerable populations in Kolkata's underserved communities.
