The Lewisboro Land Trust is pleased to announce that it has been chosen to present its workshop on Access Nature at the Land Trust Alliance's 2021 New York Land Conservation Conference. It is a great honor to be picked from the many worthy proposals submitted to participate in this annual regional conference. Our teaching workshop, "Breaking Down Barriers: Increasing diversity and inclusion for equitable access to land", will be paired with Grassroots Gardens WNY. Grassroots Gardens WNY, is another non-profit that focuses on the therapeutic benefits of nature (gardening), in particular for mental health and wellness.
Access Nature focuses on bringing the benefits of nature, including stress reduction, mitigation of negative rumination, and alleviation of anxiety, to underserved populations, especially those with mental and intellectual challenges. The program is entering its sixth year. It has been a great success, serving over 200 individuals annually.
2020 was a difficult year for Access Nature. Many of our partner organizations we're not meeting in person, so our outdoor nature programs became pretty much on hold. Being experts on making lemonade out of lemons, we decided to focus on the next phase of our project: educating other outdoor organizations on how to develop and run Access Nautre outdoor programs. We are in the process of creating a 90 minute workshop and accompanying step by step manual, in order to help other outdoor organizations and land trusts create their own Access Nature programs in their communities. Spreading the concept and the knowledge is high on our priority list.
The Land Trust Alliance's 2021 New York Conservation Conference will take place from May 5-26th. Registration will open in March for this virtual educational experience. For more information go to https://www.landtrustalliance.org/conference/2021-new-york-land-conservation-conference.
