Report on Doorstep learning for girls

By Mohammed Sayem | Executive Director

Introduction

2024 was a year of both achievements and challenges for UKBET. We exceeded targets despite devastating floods in Sylhet, Noakhali, and Cumilla, which displaced families and pushed many children into labour. UKBET remains committed to tackling these issues through education and child protection initiatives.

Doorstep Learning Programme 2024

Since 2019, UKBET’s Doorstep Learning Programme (DLP) has supported over 1,600 child domestic workers, ensuring access to education. In 2024, 448 children participated (Target: 384), and 181 transitioned to school or vocational training (Target: 128). Family Futures micro-grants helped 280 families reduce dependence on child labour. The programme expanded to marginalised Tea Garden and Bedey communities.

Key Achievements:

  • 94 children enrolled in school; 80 in vocational training; 40 in safer jobs
  • 49 siblings enrolled in school; 15 in vocational training
  • 18 community teachers conducted sessions in 21 locations
  • 35 awareness programmes engaged 1,400 people
  • 400 child domestic workers celebrated a special fun day on 10 December

Case Studies:

  • Rupali (10) (Not real name) : Orphaned, worked as a domestic worker. Through DLP, she left child labour and will start school in January 2025.
  • Shimla (16) (Not real name): Left school for child labour but learned tailoring through DLP. Now earns a living from home.
  • Maria (10) (Not real name): Forced into labour when her father was injured. A Family Futures grant enabled her father to start a mosquito net business, allowing Maria (Not real name) to return to school.

Advocacy & Government Engagement

UKBET marked key international days and co-hosted a seminar on mental health in schools. The Executive Director was appointed to government child labour committees, actively addressing child domestic labour issues.

Through education, relief, and advocacy, UKBET continues to empower vulnerable children and families, ensuring lasting impact.

Conclusion & Gratitude

The Doorstep Learning Programme 2024 has transformed lives, helping children escape labour and access education. These achievements were possible despite challenges, thanks to unwavering support.

We sincerely thank you for your generosity and commitment. Your support has empowered vulnerable children and strengthened communities. Together, we are creating lasting change and brighter futures.
