Last December the Pronatura team visited Bahia Magdalena as part of their programmed activities to maintain a fixed presence at the site, monitor areas of interest and maintain contact with the community.
During the visit, the team monitored the landscape using certain routes through the plots where it was observed that most of the site did not present any significant impact on its landscape, however, there was a large presence of solid waste in certain sites, for which the team did an improvised cleanup. This finding can lead us to address the issue of solid waste disposal with the community to find out the source of the problem.
An accomplishment of the visit was the contact made with certain key members of the Santo Domingo community who, previously, had talked us about collaborating so that they themselves could carry out a more frequent and constant surveillance of the mangrove sites. This with the objective of both them monitoring and inspecting the activities on the site as well as us receiving constant official reports of these same activities and the site's status. For now, a proposal for a community surveillance program is being made with the interested members and it's planned to have a next meeting in June 2023.
