For the Cradle Program, we set out for community visits in 2 of the slum communities in Chennai. The highlight being two women from each of the communities itself volunteered to support our initiative and went door to door and interacted with all the families (approx 700 - 800) and gathered basic details which was later recorded online as well. This database helped us in identifying 120 - 130 pregnant women.
The two women set out for round two of visits to each of the pregnant women's home and gathered more details and invited them for a kick off event. This event happened in batches in the community spaces decorated for the women to feel happy and welcome songs were played too. It turned out to be a wonderful forum for the women to discuss about pregnancy joys and fears, videos on pregnancy and child birth were played, fun games were conducted. It was also overwhelming to see few women from the community make healthy snacks to eat and beautiful gifts as takeaway home.
Our ongoing work includes - meeting with Gynaecologists, local health care centers, Self Help Group Women in the community who can offer support for our programs / workshops, putting together workshop plan for the pregnant women and their infants, hiring staff from the community, bi-weekly skill development sessions for the women.
