Cradle Health Program at Kakkan Colony - December Update

By Jessica Broder | Communications Director

We are making strides with our Cradle Health Program in the Kakkan Colony community! Six sessions have taken place so far and with each week, attendance is growing in numbers. Sessions are normally conducted on Saturday’s and are roughly 2hrs in length. Our focus remains to be on teaching the mothers about nutrition, as well as caring for themselves and their infants. Pregnancy fears and myths, breastfeeding techniques, and good food habits have been just some of the topics covered over the past six sessions. Lots of learning has been happening within these two hour sessions which has been supported by external resources when required. Specifically, the mothers have vocalized their appreciation of clear and reliable information being provided and accessibility to external resources. Each week, mothers are given different nutritious foods, such as fresh fruit, greens or millets to bring home and use during the week. Often, the snacks provided at the workshop are made from similar ingredients so that it is easy for the mothers to replicate at home.

Nithya, our Program Coordinator for Cradle Health, has been happily surprised with how honest and forward some of the mothers have been in discussions. She believes that this has enriched the learning within the group, as more mothers are willing to share their personal experiences, and attests to the safe space that is created amongst the women. Currently, she is troubleshooting how to manage infants and mothers, because often times the mothers are distracted during the sessions by their children. For now, she is seeking assistance from Pudiyador volunteers to support her in running these sessions, and playing with the babies, however, she will need to find a more suitable solution in the long run. Notably, the infants that have attended alongside their mothers, have been enjoying themselves greatly!

We look forward to seeing these mothers continue to learn over the next four sessions and graduate as our very first batch of Cradle Health Mothers at Pudiyador. Many of the women have commented on how they feel empowered by these workshops and have started sharing what they learn with their friends and other new mothers within the community. We hope that through these sessions we can create a strong network of confident mothers within each community.
