Last March, India confined its whole population trying to stop the spread of the Covid-19. This lockdown has been extended for months. Street children and their families in Mumbai have faced a terrible situation, not having a proper home to stay confined, and not being able to earn any money.
The situation was desperate for people like Rafique, a 34 years old father of two kids who, along with his wife, also has to look after his parents. He did not have a permanent job, but every morning waited, along with other neighbors, by the side of the road for a foreman to hire him. When the lockdown was decreed, he got extremely worried, wondering how could he provide for his family if he was not able to work.
In this unprecedented context, we have worked hard to provide these persons with packs of food, water and hygienic products, reaching up to 23,711 persons. Also, as there were people who did not even have a kitchen to cook the food, we distributed ready-to-eat meals to 4,950 homeless persons. All these efforts have been done collaboratively with public institutions as well as private entities and individuals. For instance, we reached an agreement with the municipal corporation to distribute food to 825 persons with special needs in Northern areas of the city.
Thanks to your support, we have helped Rafique, and thousands of people in the same situation, to overcome this very difficult situation and look into the future with hope.
