Water and wind erosion taken in hand

By Bridget Johnsen | Project Leader

Beautiful reeds prevent erosion of dam wall
Beautiful reeds prevent erosion of dam wall

Your incredibly generous monthly donation, as well as the additional British Revenue Service's boosting Gift Aid, has really taken the edge off that sinking anxiety each month as to how the costs of running PSI are going to be covered. Funded projects only ever allow 10% of their budgets to be applied to administration, but there are so many  legal, insurance, secretarial, banking, database, social media, website. marketing, fundraising and other costs, that 10% of our project work just does not touch sides. These costs, like everything else, are continuously escalating, and we simply HAVE to cover them in order to function. So we do treasure your gift, which allows us to sleep better and therefore also deliver better on our core work.

This past month we  used the  alien clearing team to replace sand dredged from the bottom of the upper Vondeling dam in 2019, now full of growing and replicating Phragmites reeds at the site where it was deposited. We picked it up using a digger loader and placed it in trailer loads onto the dam wall of the recenlty repaired lower dam. This is an erosion preventive measure because the steady daily afternoon South Westerly wind tends to create waves on the dam, and their constant lapping then erodes the clay on the wall. This can clearly be observed in the photo below, showing the workers distributing the reeds to prevent further erosion damage. Once the reeds regrow on the dam wall, they break the speed and erosive capability of the water as a natural measure, while also providing lovely habitiat for  insects, birdlife, frogs, snakes, smalll rodents, mongoose and even Cape Otter. These  simply LOVE the natural corridors we now have linking the mountain along the stream beds down to the dam, especially in the heat of summer. I  am certain that every one of these creatures will be singing your praises over the hot months to come.

Right now we are maintainig the firebreaks at the base of the mountain, in preparation for the increased wildfire risk in these days of Climate Change. Our risk has increased due to a much lower than average rainfall this year....again, and also due to the steadily increasing ambient temperatures. Using some of your kind donation last month, we also were  able to  to assist the local business unit of the Cederberg Fire Protection Association to get all the Paardeberg landowner signatures required to approve the Integrated Fire Management Plan,. This means that wildfire insurance cover can be procured  affordably by all  50 landowners of the mountain. THANK YOU, again and again.
