INMEDAquaponics scales throughout Jamaica & beyond

By Nancy Baker | Communications Director

INMED Aquaponics was a big attraction at Denbigh
INMED Aquaponics was a big attraction at Denbigh

Our team at INMED Caribbean has been super busy since our last report! In late July, our INMED Aquaponics® demonstration system was the highlight of Denbigh, the largest agriculture industry expo in the Caribbean. Since then, we’ve been bombarded with inquiries about our technology and the INMED Aquaponics® Social Enterprise (INMED ASE) from across Jamaica and other Caribbean nations.

Fun with Little Farmers

Also in July, our team set up our demo system at the Budding Farmers Grow Camp, a summer extension of Grow Club for children aged three to 12 to learn how to start their own gardens at home. INMED Caribbean taught the children how to grow vegetables via aquaponics and that they can set up their own small systems at home using locally available and recycled materials.

4-H Partnership Updates

INMED Caribbean is working with Jamaica 4-H Clubs via the INMED ASE to achieve the objectives of 4-H’s EnGenDER project, which seeks to strengthen the adaptive capacity of young male and female farmers and fishers in Jamaica. According to the UN Food & Agriculture Organization, the island nation is the third most exposed region to a number of climate change impacts.

The four primary objectives of the EnGenDER project are to:

  1.     Advance gender-responsive implementation of national adaptation plans
  2.     Support representing vulnerable populations in climate change planning
  3.     Build government capacity for gender-responsive access to climate finance through innovative solutions
  4.     Build on the work of other partners working at the national level to help strengthen gender-inclusive recovery plans

Over the next six months, The INMED ASE will support 4-H to:

  •  Provide education to 600 youth farmers and fisherfolk in selected communities on climate-smart agriculture, enterprise development and income-generation opportunities.
  • Facilitate training and certification in crop production, fisheries and agro-processing to 250 youth.
  • Provide venture inputs, technical support and coaching for 175 youth to launch agro-business, including  six young entrepreneurs who will receive aquaponics systems.

The Really BIG News!

We are thrilled to report that INMED Caribbean has been awarded a planning-phase grant to expand the INMED ASE to four additional Caribbean nations. More on that in our next report!

What started out as a seed project to support subsistence farmers in Jamaica has grown into a full-service, self-sustaining social enterprise that is not only strengthening food security and climate adaptation, but is also preserving endangered environments and generating sustainable livelihoods for the most vulnerable populations in Jamaica. Thank you for joining us on this journey. We look forward to scaling our impact with your support!
