Venezuelans are still living in a complex humanitarian crisis, according to ENCOVI in 2021 94.2% of Venezuelans experienced some type of nutritional insecurity, with an alarming 25% experiencing severe nutritional insecurity.
Food insecurity puts everyone at risk of malnutrition, but especially babies that are one of the most vulnerable.
During the last 2 years we have been supporting a Clinical Recovery Programme in one of the biggest hospitals that serve Caracas -Los Magallanes de Catia Hospital. This vital programme looks after 40 babies with an average of 90 babies a year and delivered by a knowledgeable and experienced partner a paediatrician who works in the hospital and donates her time experience and knowledge so these babies can have a chance!
Babies are evaluated before admission; only critical cases are admitted to the programme to benefit from the resources. The babies and their caregivers are monitored closely every week, their height and weight is measured and recorded, they are seen by a doctor and nurse, and after individually assessing their progress there are given the adequate amount of baby formula for the following week.
The median age and weight of the babies at intake is 2.0 months and 2.47kg respectively and they leave the programme with a median age and weight of 6.8 months and 6.49Kg. During their journey on the programme the babies increase their weight 162% and achieve an adequate weight for their age, leaving behind malnutrition and the complications it entails.
This programme is possible thanks to your generous donations and trust in our organisation and for that we are always grateful.
Best,
