Careers Inspiration For Every Child

As we head towards the end of the school year we have a busy programme of events in schools. One of the areas of our work that is growing is work in primary schools. This summer we will be working in 12 primary schools in Norwich, mostly running Enterprise Days. These offer students as young as 9 or 10 the chance to work in teams to develop ideas for new products or services, sometimes addressing a specific challenge, like climate change. They get the chance to problem-solve, be creative, work in teams and present their ideas to judges. These are the sorts of skills that we believe will be useful to them in their future careers, whatever path they choose.

Form the Future isn't alone in believing these are important skills. Various organisations from the World Economic Forum to the OECD to Deloitte agree. But the education system hasn't yet caught up.

This is why our work is so important, and your support makes it possible.

One of the ways we provide careers inspiration is by giving children as young as eight years old the chance to have hands-on experiences of science, technology and engineering. Over the last few months we've given over 1,000 young people this opportunity. Our goal is to challenge preconceptions about what it's like to work in STEM industries and who can do these jobs. We're showing children that STEM is for everybody. It seems to be working because students tell us they can now imagine being scientists and engineers and they want to continue to study these subjects at higher levels.

In the past few months we've also kicked off a new mentoring programme with students in their penultimate year of high-school, enabling the students to get advice and guidance from experienced professionals while they think about their next steps in education or into work.

Our campaign to raise vital funds to continue our work has been very successful. In addition to what we've raised on GlobalGiving, we've had a further £11,000 donated to us directly - as a direct result of this campaign. We've also been thrilled to see people making regular monthly donations. This is such an important part of making our work sustainable.
