Grand-Anse: Breadfruit Flour to Fight Malnutrition

FAO estimates indicate that more than 50,000 tons of breadfruit are harvested each year in Haiti. Unfortunately, due to a lack of resources for conservation, more than 35% of the harvest is wasted, while the country is facing unprecedented food insecurity and malnutrition.

Breadfruit, despite its large harvests that can help combat hunger and malnutrition, can not only be processed to avoid waste, but also to sell breadfruit flour to generate income and also to use it to fight hunger and malnutrition.

According to research, breadfruit flour is renowned for its nutritional qualities. Its consumption as a source of nutrients has yielded significant results.

This is what CHSAN is doing with breadfruit as a local resource to fight malnutrition.

We recently set up a small-scale factory for processing breadfruit into flour. The results are satisfactory. In addition to its consumption, breadfruit flour provides breastfeeding mothers with a new source of nutrients, allows them to sell this product with added value, and also helps prevent waste of their crops.
