Provide Blanket Health Care to 510 Destitute Kids

Health is the greatest wealth. Staying healthy is the key to happiness and we here at PYDS take care of all our children.

As the students hail from underprivileged background and does not get proper health facility, we provide our children with proper medical care. This academic year (2018-19), the students were taken for medical check – up.

De warming tablets were given to the students to treat parasitic worm infection. The nurse at our school explained the procedure for consuming this medicine. An anti – scabies program was conducted in school for hostel boys and girls. They were made aware about the symptoms of scabies and how its medication is done.

A dental camp was conducted in the school on 29^th May 2018 where classes 11, 12 and school staff participated. The students were individually checked. Doctors informed students about the cavities and tooth decay. Blood test and vaccination camp was conducted by Max India Foundation where blood group was tested. Children were also vaccinated against typhoid.

The students of Navjeevan Program and Vocational students went on eye check-up. Students with weak eye sight were provided with spectacles.

A session on oral hygiene and hand washing was also conducted for the students.

There were few medical cases that required proper medical care and attention.

• Divyansh is one of our good students of class 3 and has been with us for 5 years, from his early days in ECLC. Heunderwent pyeloplasty (surgical reconstruction of the renal pelvis). He had a congenital problem with his left kidney and about 70% had already been destroyed. Fortunately, they came to understand about it before its seriousness. The doctor who examined the child identified the seriousness of the problem. The surgery went off well and his left kidney recovered to the extent of 10% and didn’t degenerate any further. He gave his final exams and is now in 4^th grade.
• Pragya of class 2 has DNS (Deviated Nasal Septum) in which one side of the nose is wider than normal. The pain in her ear bone and nose bleeding were the symptoms of her DNS. Medications are being provided to the child and doctors have given a reference of OT. She is now in class 3 and continuing with her regular classes.
• Amisha of class 12 had multiple tuberculosis nodes at the side of her neck. One of her nerve got infected and had to be operated. Her treatment began on March 8^th 2019. The operation went off well. She is much better now.

Divyansh’s family is native to Bharatwala, Bisht Gaon. His mother Poonam works with our sister concern, Purkal Stree Shakti Samiti, and is the sole earning member of her family. Her husband Vikas used to drive a loader when he was younger. However, he got into the bad habit of drinking and sold the vehicle. He now works as casual labour and spends his irregular wages on his addiction and therefore doesn’t support the family in any manner. The family of seven resides in a humble kuchcha house of two small rooms. Their belongings are minimal and their meals cooked using firewood. Their lifestyle indicates living standards assessed as below lower middle class.

Divyansh is one of our good students of class 3 and has been with us for 5 years, from his early days in ECLC. A few comments from his teacher in the last class report are as follows:

• “We are very happy and quite surprised to see the improvement shown in his studies”
• “In English, he is able to read simple/complex passages fluently with speed”
• “He tries his best to solve Mathematics questions mentally”
• “He loves singing Punjabi songs and takes interest in dance classes”
• “He is one of the best sportspersons in his class”

Fortunately, they came to understand about it a month ago when he was travelling in our bus and suffered a minor injury. The doctor who examined the child identified the seriousness of the problem.

The surgery has gone off well and the left kidney can recover to the extent of about 10%. It will not be lost since it will not degenerate any further. We expect Divyansh to resume attending school soon.

If we had not interfered there was the risk of the left kidney having been completely lost. Due to the congenital nature of the problem there is still the risk of the right kidney also getting affected. We need to examine his progress annually through an ultrasound to make sure that the kidneys are in good shape. Taking onus for the healthcare needs of each beneficiary under our care.
