Excited for 2019!

Dearest Donors,

We’re so grateful to you all for supporting us on this journey! The center is successfully hosting classes and is filled seven days a week, with our own educational programming in language studies, computer science, and financial literacy, as well as partner programs from local arts and dance collectives.

We are still working towards sustainability, expanding our microfinance program, trying to create marketable products for local and international sales, and working on plans for a CAFE! The Hope Cafe has been a dream of HCU’s from the start, but we are only now having the stability to think about this type of expansion. Since HCU already has a beautiful, stable building, garden, staff, and wifi, the only further investments we will need are basic furniture and a coffee machine. Since this will be a small business, we will be seeking loans instead of donations! We will pay our investors back over a 5 year period, and we will seek investors who are likely to reinvest after that period is finished.

P.S. This week is International Women’s Week! The numbers are in and we’ve reached almost 3,000 women with microfinance loans and sanitary pad disbursements, allowing so much more human potential to be released into Northern Uganda!

If you’re in Berlin, be sure to check out our Ladies-First solidarity fundraiser party! We will be screening a short film from Ugandan actress, writer, and director Kemiyondo Coutinho. The film challenges Uganda’s “mini-skirt” bill, which holds women accountable for rape based on their clothing choices, rather than the attacker. The film will be followed by DJ sets in partnership with Berlin’s female, trans, nonbinary DJ school and collective, No Shade.

Call to Action: Nodding Syndrome Care Center

Dear Donors,

It is with great joy that we confirm that Hope Center Uganda’s flagship center is finally fully-functional, sustainable, and looking towards a bright future! We host regular education programs in literacy, computer science, women’s health, business training, and even DJ classes to hundreds of members of the local community.

However, it is with even greater urgency that we ask you to please look towards our newest project, a Special Needs Intervention for a Nodding Syndrome Care Center. This is the only care center in Uganda for children affected by Nodding Syndrome, a life-threatening neurological disease affecting an estimated 10,000 children in Eastern Africa, with increasingly heavy pockets in post-war areas of Uganda. The Nodding Syndrome Care Center was originally founded by an organization not related to us, Hope for Humans, which ran out of funding last year.

In our refusal to stagnate, or deny the community the services it needs most, Hope Center Uganda is expanding from our usual programming for this special needs circumstance to provide therapy and care for the children, and counselling and capacity-building for the center and the surrounding community. This concept is designed with the mission for the Nodding Syndrome Care Center keep its doors open and continue to help affected children, medical researchers, and the surrounding community in the struggle to understand, cope, and treat Nodding Syndrome.
