School Year Ends with Hot Weather, but a New Market

By Evelind Schecter | Program Manager

Lots of Delicious Lettuce
Lots of Delicious Lettuce

It’s the hot season again at Warm Heart. As we harvest the last of our nutritious vegetables, the fields are being prepped and patiently await the return of the rains. The scorching days have their silver lining, though—mango and longan trees are in bloom, and the hills are alive with the vibrant colors of bougainvillea.

School wrapped up just as the seasonal haze settled over the region. We are proud to share that three of our students graduated from 9th grade and have been accepted to Phrao High School, where they will pursue studies in Math & Science and Languages (Chinese and English). Meanwhile, our four high school graduates are eagerly waiting for news from universities.

School starts again in mid-May.  Until then, the younger children have gone to the mountain villages to get out of the heat and the haze.  They will reconnect with extended family in their villages.  Children without a safe home village will join our staff during their visits home to the mountains.

We started the Learning Center in Hang Dong to have a base closer to the city.  Our friend, Spence Leung, is running the center with plans to teach about permaculture and biochar.  The venue has space for workshops and a small coffee shop, plus garden plots to rent and showcase sustainable agriculture.  So far, we've started classes for Burmese children to catch up on their studies and held two Saturday markets with biochar demonstrations.

Our young farmers stepped up in style, packing vegetables and eggs from our gardens using recycled paper and banana leaves. They served coffee and fresh fruit drinks and proudly sold their homegrown produce. The markets are a chance for the kids to show their hard work and learn about running a business, caring for the environment, and working together.

As always, we are deeply grateful for your continued support. You are helping us grow not just food, but futures.

With best wishes for the months ahead,

Dana, Michael, Evelind, and the Warm Heart Family
