The 63rd London International Youth Science Forum is fast approaching and we are excited to report that we have offered nine scholarships for African students to attend in person. This summer we look forward to welcoming Marina, Stephen and Olive from Kenya, Innocent and Sharifa from Tanzania, Tinovimbanashe and Yolanda from Zimbabwe and Zwivhuya and Rokunda from South Africa. For the first time we have implemented partial scholarships (covering the cost of registration) to increase the reach of our funds in supporting African students. We are also supporting a number of students to attend the Forum virtually through the online platform.

We are continuing to strengthen and extend our African partnerships as we progress our student selection process for scholarships for the 2022 London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF). We are excited to be working with partners in Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe in identifying students for in person attendance at the Forum as well as understanding how we can support online hubs for virtual attendance of African students.
Previous scholarship awardee Marina from Kenya has reported back to us about her experiences of her online attendance at the 62nd LIYSF expressing excitement at the opportunities this opened up for her; “The London Youth Science Forum is an educative, eye-opening and inspiring program to attend. l have benefitted so much from the program for it gave me a new insight into the science world. It deepened my thirst for different science subjects. The science visits, posters, workshops and lectures all took my knowledge to a new bar. It was an opportunity to connect to many people from all over the globe…this has enabled me exchange ideas with them. LIYSF was a life-time opportunity for me.”

After a challenging year we are pleased to report that the 62nd London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) took place in July and was a great success. The Forum was run as a hybrid event with 60 students attending in person and over 400 students joining online from across the globe. The event was attended by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal in her new role as Patron. Students engaged with world class scientists from a number of disciplines including Professor Sarah Gilbert who led the Oxford University vaccine development team, former President of the Royal Society Professor Lord Martin Rees and celebrated space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE.
The pandemic prevented students from the Sub-Saharan region travelling to London to attend the Forum this year but we were pleased to support the online attendance of scholarship awardee Marina from Kenya. As well as engaging with the lectures and online visits, Marina had the opportunity to interact with students from all over the world. We look forward to continuing to support Marina, along with our other alumni students, as they pursue their careers in science enhanced by their experiences and connections from LIYSF.
