The past few months have been a rollercoaster in the fight for the northern white rhino. We've experienced moments of immense hope, followed by the crushing weight of loss. Yet, through it all, your unwavering support has been a constant source of strength.
In September 2023, the BioRescue Project successfully achieved the world's first rhino pregnancy through embryo transfer. A southern white rhino embryo created in-vitro from collected egg cells and sperm, was transferred to a surrogate mother on Ol Pejeta in September 2023, with confirmation of the pregnancy 70 days later.
Despite this milestone, unexpected challenges arose as the surrogate mother, Curra, and teaser bull, Owuan, tragically succumbed to climate change-induced flooding and dormant Clostridia bacteria spores in late November. Immediate measures were taken to protect all rhinos, including Najin and Fatu.
The grief was profound, impacting our team and the entire conservation community. But amidst the darkness, a renewed sense of purpose emerged. We view these challenges not as roadblocks, but as opportunities to learn, adapt, and strengthen our resolve.
Now, more than ever, your support is crucial. Najin and Fatu, our remaining northern white rhinos, are thriving thanks to the dedicated care they receive. Their well-being is a testament to the impact of your contributions.
Looking ahead, our team is actively searching for new surrogate mothers and teaser bulls. This vital step is the bridge to the next embryo transfer – a pivotal moment that could rewrite the future for Najin and Fatu.
Your continued support during this critical period is essential. It fuels our research, guides our efforts, and allows us to persevere through hardship. Together, we can overcome these challenges and secure a future where northern white rhinos once again grace the savannas.
In these challenging times, your generosity and belief in our mission have been a source of immense strength. Thank you for standing with us, every step of the way.
