Help MADRE and the Umoja Uaso Women’s Group bring load-carrying bicycles to Indigenous women in Kenya so they can earn income, haul water, and bring people to the hospital.
Umoja village was founded by indigenous Samburu women as a sanctuary for women fleeing sexual and domestic violence. Now climate change threatens their traditional herding economy and women must find new ways to support their families. They also need a way to haul water across long distances without sustaining injuries and ensure that the sick and eldery can access a clinic miles away. Umoja and 7 neighboring villages are now working collectively to meet these urgent needs sustainably.
MADRE will provide durable, motor-assisted bicycle taxis to each community to enable women to: 1) earn income by providing taxi services to tourists, 2) haul jugs of water for their families and 3) bring sick and elderly people to the nearest clinic.
The project will help women earn income to sustain their communities and will strengthen ties between 8 villages. It will also improve health as women avoid injuries from carrying water and increase access to health care.
