Name of Family – Mother & Children:
Maya’s Journey: From Desperation to Empowerment
Maya K. (Name changed for privacy purposes), a 42-year-old mother of six, belongs to a community that has faced centuries of discrimination and hardship. Despite the relentless struggles she endured, her life took a remarkable turn through our Educare Family program.
Born in the remote village of Sokhu in Sindhuli, Maya was the second of ten siblings in a family where poverty overshadowed every aspect of life. Her father, a carpenter, and her mother, a field laborer, barely earned enough to meet even the most basic needs, making education an impossible dream for their children.
At just 16, Maya was married off to Hari K. (Name changed for privacy purposes) in an arranged marriage. Despite their financial struggles, the early years of marriage were filled with love and hope. Her husband, a hardworking laborer, was her pillar of support. Together, they raised six children, filling their home with love and laughter.
But tragedy struck in 2016. On a stormy winter night, Hari tragically fell off a cliff while returning from work. His body was found two days later. The loss was unbearable. Not only did Maya lose her husband and best friend, but also the sole breadwinner of the family. Life as she knew it crumbled, and what followed were years of unimaginable suffering.
A Mother’s Struggle
After her husband's death, Maya faced relentless blame and taunts from her in-laws, who accused her of bringing misfortune to their family. The emotional and mental abuse became unbearable. Left with no support, she made the brave decision to leave her village, taking her six children with her in search of a better life.
What followed was a desperate fight for survival. There were nights when they went to bed hungry, and mornings when Maya woke up with no idea how to provide for the day. They arrived in Pokhara, moving from one unsafe shelter to another before finally settling in a slum.
Even there, life remained harsh. Maya took up any work she could find—from laboring at construction sites to collecting garbage—just to feed her children. The burden of raising six children alone was overwhelming, yet she never gave up. Every day was a battle against hunger, despair, and the harsh realities of being a single mother.
A Ray of Hope
Maya’s turning point came in 2018 when she attended one of Bahini Educare Foundation's awareness programs. Hearing about their support for single mothers, she visited the office the next day and shared her story.
Moved by her resilience and determination, the foundation immediately stepped in to help. We assisted her in obtaining essential documents and, in 2019, enrolled her family in the Educare Family program. With our support, Maya’s children were enrolled in school, and the family received aid for education, healthcare, and basic needs. Slowly, the clouds of despair began to lift.
A New Chapter: Remarkable Transformation
Today, Maya’s life has transformed in ways she never thought possible. Two of her daughters, Sita and Gita (Names changed for privacy purposes), are now married and settled with their husbands.
Her third daughter, Laxmi (Name changed for privacy purposes), struggled academically and failed the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) last year. However, with our support, she enrolled in a barista and hotel services training program and is now excelling. The hotel where she is training has already promised her a job.
Her younger daughter, Kriti (Name changed for privacy purposes), is thriving in Grade 10, while her two sons, Ramesh and Arjun (Names changed for privacy purposes), are progressing well in school. Maya herself has moved away from hard labor and now runs a small street vending business, selling food, hair accessories, and Nepali sweets. This business allows her to provide for her family with dignity and hope.
Her journey from despair to self-reliance is not just her own—it is an inspiration to others in her community.
Gratitude & Hope
Maya’s story is a testament to the power of compassion and support. Through Bahini Educare Foundation’s intervention, she was given the opportunity to rebuild her life. Her journey is a shining example of what single mothers can achieve when given the right resources and encouragement.
This remarkable transformation would not have been possible without the generosity of our partners and donors. Your support has given Maya’s family, and many others like hers, a new lease on life. Together, we are changing lives, one family at a time.
Thank you for being a part of this journey and for making a lasting impact on the lives of single mothers and their children.
