By producing, translating and donating 10 short films about plastic, we will inform and empower communities affected by the consequences of plastic all over the world. The science-based films will clarify the ubiquity, health and environmental risks of plastic, providing solutions. We will distribute them through our extensive network of NGOs, associations, schools and universities built throughout 16 years. Screenings will be followed by open discussions organised by us and our partners.
Since the 1950's, we have produced around 8.3 billion tons of plastic. Its numerous forms and byproducts are littering our waterways, food chains and causing severe health issues to both humans and animals. Our recycling system has failed and interference in children's brain development and cancer due to plastics are already a reality. But this is unknown to many. There is a lot of confusion and misinformation about plastic, due to deliberate hiding and misleading data.
The 10 WHYPLASTIC? short-films will work as a unique medium to educate strong, resilient communities and create public understanding of what the problems of plastic are, how we got here - and what we can do about it. After producing and translating the films, The Why will mobilize its 70 active partners and organize screenings followed by debates, having special focus on the youth in vulnerable communities. "Information is power", that's why we help everyone to access it.
The films are part of the campaign WHY PLASTIC? that will create a global, nuanced, factual debate around plastic pollution and the problems it is connected to, such as the climate crisis, environmental justice and public health at the same time providing inspiring systemic solutions. The WHY PLASTIC? short-films will help create sustainable communities with mitigated risks and implemented solutions to the multiple plastic struggles.
