WHOOP WHOOP! Machel Montano, Trinidadian King of Soca Music, to Visit Sadhguru School in December
This time last year Chaka, aka Chakabars, a leading social influencer for education and philanthropy in Africa, came to see if elements of Sadhguru School could be applied to his plan for the war-stricken community he supports in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo.
"Need a school like this in Congo.. its actually like I fell down and woke up in heaven", he said, posting on Insta stories.
His visit was brought about by Che, a tireless music manager and a founder of Conscious Music Circle, together with arts-lover Gita, a long-time key supporter and mover and shaker of Sadhguru School, with education and cultural preservation at the heart of what she does.
Watch our best video yet - Chaka and Che's visit - in the blue link after the images.
This time the Che-Gita winning team :0) have organised the visit of the irrepressable Machel Montano whose vitality and love of life shine out from his face, literally. All of Sadhguru School is over the moon, in a hive of musical activity, having dreamed of such a visit for more than two years.
Machel's mission is to successfully usher Soca into the realm of mainstream music. He began his music career in Trinidad at the age of seven - who better to inspire our budding students? He released his first album, 'Too Young to Soca' at the age of 11! Machel is the only two-time recipient of the Bob Marley Award for Entertainer of the Year. More recently in 2024 he completed a four night residency at the legendary Apollo Theatre, New York. This was an historic moment for Soca and Calypso, to have a show of this calibre hosted at a venue where so many iconic musicians have graced the same stage.
Those of you following Conscious Planet's Save Soil Movement will already be familiar with Machel through his songs 'Come Awake' performed with Isha Home School, and 'Save Soil Riddim - Touch the Ground' with Marge Blackman. It is said that Machel completes every concert with the Save Soil message.
What This Space: a Recording Studio at Sadhguru School
We were blessed with a donation from Che to establish a small recording studio with music recording equipment, opening up a vista of opportunities for the kids to not only learn the fundamentals of music recording, but to hear their own songs mixed and recorded. Part of Machel's visit will be to record music with the students and get them using the newly acquired equipment for the first time. With Che's help the vision is to hold at Sadhguru School song writing camps and artist collaborations from within Uganda and abroad long in to the future.
