The year 2024 has presented us with unique challenges as we navigate the transition from Kenya's 8-4-4 system to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). This marks the final cohort of students joining secondary school under the 8-4-4 system, signifying a significant shift in our educational landscape. The selection process for cohort 8 students proved particularly demanding, with a multitude of applications and many deserving cases. As a result, we expanded our support to accommodate more students than originally planned.
Emmanuel is one of the students we have chosen to support this year in cohort 8, a testament to the resilience and determination seen in many beneficiaries of the "Watoto Wasome" Program. Born in Siaya County, Emmanuel and his five siblings moved to one of the slums in Nairobi following their parents' separation when he was just 4 years old. Tragically, Emmanuel's mother, who supported the family as a cleaner and launderer, passed away in 2021 after battling cancer for some time. Since then, Emmanuel and his siblings have been cared for by their elder sister, who is a student at a Kenyan institution of higher learning.
After their mother's death, the family moved into a modest house costing Ksh. 5,000 per month. Emmanuel's elder siblings, especially his eldest sister, have taken on odd jobs to support the family and ensure their daily needs are met, prioritizing the younger siblings' education. At one point, his sister even deferred her studies to focus on her siblings' well-being, a sacrifice that was undoubtedly challenging for her.
Emmanuel sat for the KCPE exams last year alongside 1.4 million other candidates and achieved an impressive score of 384 out of 500. He received an admission letter to one of Kenya's top schools, but unfortunately, his elder sister faced immense challenges in ensuring he could attend. I vividly recall the countless calls and visits she made to our office after the school year had started, seeking assistance. Eventually, after thorough vetting, we provided Emmanuel with the opportunity he deserved. At the end of the term, Emmanuel returned to our office with an outstanding grade of A, despite joining school later than his peers.
Emmanuel's story underscores the vital role that your generous support plays in transforming lives. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to GlobalGiving for your continued support and commitment to creating opportunities for deserving students like Emmanuel. Your dedication and partnership are invaluable as we work towards making a lasting impact on the lives of many students.
