Watoto Wasome is a program driven by a strong desire to see all academically gifted students from underprivileged backgrounds transit to high school and beyond. We believe that education is the greatest equalizer that offers life changing opportunities in real world, and an effective way to end vicious poverty cycle. What the scholars benefit from at Watoto Wasome Program: 1. Scholastic Support 2. Mentorship - Leadership & Innovation, Career Guidance, Community Service, Life Skills.
Challenges such as poverty affect pupils' transition from primary to secondary school. The cost of Secondary education in Kenya is largely met by the parents in form of tuition among other costs. Therefore, net enrollment rates are significantly higher in pre-primary, primary and secondary education, for children from households in the top 20% of income distribution, when compared to the bottom 20% (The World Bank, 2022).
Affecto Foundation flagship program, 'Watoto Wasome' Scholarship Program seeks to address this challenge by giving such learners an opportunity to go back to class and continue pursuing their dreams. By providing scholarships, Affecto Foundation ensures such learners are safe and able to mature into responsible adults at their own pace. Affecto provides scholarships to academically gifted learners from underserved families/ communities in Kenya.
Watoto Wasome aims at educating 400 students annually. The beneficiaries of the program will be given a chance in the competitive world to venture into well-paying jobs and also initiate employment opportunities. This will not only break the poverty cycle in the homes but also in the community. Having encouraged them to give back to the community, these students will establish a culture of philanthropy.
