Building Climate Resilience During Wildfires

By Leah Crabtree | Project Leader

Like so many areas affected by climate change, this month we've sadly had wildfires raging across the landscape, threatening precious wildlife, surrounding communities and wildlife habitats - driven by strong winds, the flames spread rapidly, putting our precious resources at risk.

Vets, rangers, and staff members alike joined forces with our tourism partners, working side-by-side to combat the flames. Tirelessly digging firebreaks, beating back the flames, and putting their own lives on the line to protect Ol Pejeta. Their communication was immediate and effective, ensuring every team member was aligned and informed - we are relieved to report that all staff and volunteers are safe and accounted for and the fire has now been put out.

We are committed to using the experience gained from this incident to strengthen our future fire preparedness and response strategies.

The wildfire was a stark reminder of the challenges faced by our teams daily. They understand that their role extends far beyond routine patrols and medical care and that they are the frontline against climate change, defenders against poaching, and protectors against any crisis that threatens Ol Pejeta.

Your support strengthens our ability to respond swiftly and effectively to any challenge we face. It provides our teams with the tools, training, and resources they need to maintain their readiness. Seeing our teams put their lives on the line to protect Ol Pejeta is a testament to their dedication and the importance of your support. You make their bravery possible. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
