Jose, Yesica and baby Dafne are in desperate need of a clean water filter!
This family lives in extreme poverty and lacks even the most basic essentials. The father, José, is currently unemployed, but looking for work. Although they don't always have enough to eat, he and his wife, Yesica, have tried to feed the 5 month old baby Dafne as healthy as possible with breastmilk. However, when mama is barely eating to nourish herself, she cannot produce enough healthy breastmilk. The lack of clean, safe drinking water only exaccerbates the situation.
In fact, at the health center Yesica was told that she should maintain an adequate weight and is losing too much too fast due to nursing without taking in sufficient calories, so the mother herself is being monitored as a priority case by SESAN (Secretariat of Food and Nutritional Security of the Presidency of Guatemala). THIS IS SERIOUS AND MEANS MOM'S LIFE IS AT RISK!
It was recommended the mother use formula since she is too malnourished herself. This is difficult not only because of the price of the product, but also because of transportation expenses, as they would need to travel to Cuilapa’s downtown to get it. Additionally, without a clean water filter, the baby has a high probability of getting sick with extreme diarrhea and could die within just a few weeks if the bottles being used are not prepared with and then properly sanitized with safe, clean water.
This is just one story of one family. The approach to helping turn their story around is complex. They need formula for baby Daphne, a source of income for dad Jose, nourishment for malnourished mother Yesica, and a water filter to prevent extreme weight loss in all three of them.
