With your contribution, the constructed well in the Sidama region serves 600 people every single day. This wouldn't have been possible without your support, assistance, and meaningful donations.
The need for water in rural Ethiopia is the Unspoken Truth. But unfortunately, it is something that cannot be addressed through short-term support. As of September 2022, 121,295,237 people are living in Ethiopia. Among these people, over 40 million people don't have access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities. And more than 50% of the population is forced to walk more than 30 minutes to get water for their households.
Moreover, water availability is not guaranteed even after walking for more than 30 minutes. As a result, 68.2% of women and young girls are temporarily burdened with the responsibility to satisfy their family's thirst.
Young girls who are supposed to be learning to spend time looking for water and don't attend school. Lack of education, especially in young girls and women, leads them to insecurity, shame, and feeling inferior during puberty.
The vision of Drop of Water
DoW envisions 100% access to safe drinking water, Sanitation, and Proper Hygiene practices in all parts of Ethiopia. We stand by our community and support them with their water and sanitation needs and services, but our support is not limited to water and Sanitation. Through each project, a relationship is created with the community resulting in cross-sectoral impact and reach in the following areas:
We have seen the communities we have served now know what clean water is. A daughter doesn't have to relive the struggles of her mother toiling long distances to fetch water. A generational curse of accessing unsafe and polluted water is broken with access to clean water. New mothers understand the use of clean water and healthy nutrition. They can now know and implement healthy food resulting in proper nutrient consumption by infants.
Through our Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) program, women and girls are properly aware of their menstrual hygiene management and are provided with necessary sanitary kits.
Future Plans for Drop of Water
This is just the beginning, and much more is expected from us. Across Ethiopia, we have reached six regions for more than 30,000 people, and 100+ clean water supply development projects have been done so far.
We will keep working until clean water is easily accessible to all the nations throughout Ethiopia. We plan to expand our reach and go deeper, including neglected regions and some parts of Ethiopia that look unreachable.
Your partnership with DOW brings a smile to our community in rural Ethiopia. Together we can transform people's lives in rural Ethiopia.
