As of August 7th official figures report 24,166 cases of Covid-19 with 886 recorded in the previous 24 hours. According to experts, these figures are grossly understated and Venezuela is far from flattening the curve of Covid-19 cases. Hospitals in Venezuela do not have the capacity to cope with the pandemic, public and private hospitals are already reaching capacity.
The pandemic has a compounding effect on the existing humanitarian crisis in Venezuela. 7M people (1/4 of the population) in Venezuela are in need of humanitarian assistance. Many rely on informal economy for survival and the strict quarantine rules make it even harder for them to do so. Access to water and hygiene are more critical than ever as an effective way to mitigate and prevent coronavirus transmission.
