Project Report | Aug 10, 2020
WASH programme to mitigate COVID 19

By Mariana Siblesz and Andreina Palma | Project Leaders

As of August 7th official figures report 24,166 cases of Covid-19 with 886 recorded in the previous 24 hours. According to experts, these figures are grossly understated and Venezuela is far from flattening the curve of Covid-19 cases. Hospitals in Venezuela do not have the capacity to cope with the pandemic, public and private hospitals are already reaching capacity.

The pandemic has a compounding effect on the existing humanitarian crisis in Venezuela. 7M people (1/4 of the population) in Venezuela are in need of humanitarian assistance. Many rely on informal economy for survival and the strict quarantine rules make it even harder for them to do so. Access to water and hygiene are more critical than ever as an effective way to mitigate and prevent coronavirus transmission.

With your contribution and a grant we have secured, we have successfully:

  1. Installed 96 water tanks in soup kitchens and community centers in 11 states improving the operations of these centers and ensuring continuity of food programmes
  2. Distributed 14,700 bars of soap through five of our partner NGO’s in Caracas, Aragua, Vargas, Merida, Anzoátegui, Lara and Zulia and reinforced message of the importance of washing hands regularly
  3. Procured 33 water purification filters (in transit to Venezuela) to provide safe drinking water for children attending food nutrition programmes.

Basic services are an urgent necessity in Venezuela and we continue to work to grow this project to reach more children and families in need.

Thank you for your trust and for supporting our WASH project.
