Thank you again for your generous support of SJAC’s campaign “Voice for Victims: 20,000 Documents Expose Crimes.” In 2020, SJAC postponed a planned in-person analysis of SJAC’s set of 20,000 Syrian government documents due to COVID-19. In late 2021, however, SJAC was able to hand over the documents safely and securely to two analysts who independently conducted offline analysis of these documents. Today, SJAC is proud to announce that the documents have been fully analyzed thanks to your contribution.
Over the past year, the analysts have reviewed each government document, tagging them by themes and violations so that the documents can be used as reference in future investigations and justice efforts. Within the 20,000 documents, SJAC found lists of detainees, admissions of guilt by Syrian government officials, and more details into patterns of targeting protected populations and entities. This analysis will be accessible to justice mechanisms, such as the UN International Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM). Already the documents have contributed to SJAC’s investigations and publications, including a report on the Syrian Government’s systematic disposal and destruction of human remains and an investigation on double tap strikes on hospitals.
Your support ensured that this analysis was fully completed and accessible to future justice efforts. In the future, SJAC plans on publishing more details from the analysis and will cross-reference the documents when assisting authorities investigating crimes in Syria. Your contributions in 2020 continue to have a lasting impact on the quest for justice for Syrians.
Thank you again for your continued support of SJAC’s work.
