Thank you again for your generous support to SJAC’s campaign “Voice for Victims: 20,000 Documents Expose Crimes.” The goal of this project is for SJAC's Data Analysts to analyze 20,000 Syrian government documents, and to allow the analysis to happen quickly, smoothly, and effectively. However, due to health guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic, the in-person workshop initially planned to analyze the documents has been put on hold. Because of the highly sensitive nature of these documents, they can not be securely analyzed online. That portion of the project will take place once it is safe for team members to travel, and SJAC has reserved donated funds until an in-person analysis is possible.
In the meantime, we are thrilled to share updates on the Data Analysts' work. During these times of social distancing, the analysis team has been conducting its work online, including participating in vital professional development that will improve document analysis in the future. Recently, the team was trained in geolocation skills. Using various online tools, the team is now able to locate towns and even specific buildings named in government documents, link them to open-source evidence, and authenticate them. This skill will be utilized as the Data Analysts report important findings from their forthcoming analysis to SJAC’s research team.
Many thanks for supporting SJAC’s work! Keep up with our work on our website.
