Silence is Violence

November 25th marked the International Day for the Prevention of Violence against Women. Unfortunately, our fight for womens’ rights and personal safety is far from over, and gender-based violence against women continues to rage.
We are horrified by the silence of the international community to the atrocities committed against Israeli women and children on October 7th. Women’s organizations in Israel are reeling from the after effects of these heinous crimes, only to be horrified a second time by the deafening silence, and calls to negate women’s testimonies of gender-based crimes.
For Her Academy’s students, the events of October 7th caused panic attacks and severe anxiety, bringing up memories of atrocities they endured in their past. Most feared leaving their home, and feared intruders entering their personal space. Our students lost jobs, and lost the routine they had been working so hard to maintain.
Her Academy's staff has been working 24/7 fielding calls from our students experiencing anxiety and fear, offering assistance, food, delivering hot meals, diapers, formula, medication and companionship. We keep in touch with every student on a daily basis, when all rehabilitation has stopped and social workers are redirected to help in hospitals, and with victims of the war. We are there for each and every student and their individual needs.
We are at a critical point where our recovery as a society depends on how women's vulnerabilities are addressed.
Today more than ever, we call for:
The recognition of, and cessation of violence against women in all forms.
The safe return of all hostages, with specialized rehabilitation of those who suffered rape and sexual violence.
Ensuring that women’s voices are heard at decision making tables.
Ensuring that weapons are not distributed indiscriminately, and that gun controls are in place to avoid domestic gender-based crimes.
Enhanced support for marginalized women.
Especially now, Her Academy’s women - students, staff and volunteers, affirm that “Silence is Violence”.
