Dream Learn Work 5th Report on GlobalGiving

Dream Learn Work’s mission is to give youth from less developed areas opportunities for a better future through education and employment.

Introduction

The year is flying by! We have participated in a number of events and activities and have a lot to share. This report outlines Dream Learn Work`s activities on the third quarter of this year.

2018 Courses

Dream Learn Work recruits participants from social projects that work in less developed neighborhoods. These local projects contribute in the completion of basic education and the development of life skills. Dream Learn Work offers the next step: professional skills development and the support to enter the formal job market. Our amazing (and small) team have recruited 52 new students this year. These participants have received guidance and had their educational path prepared with the support of the NGO they are linked to. In total we have 111 participants enrolled in our program, some are at the end of their educational journey and starting to work and change their futures.

DLW has developed a model for training that all participants need to follow. They need to demonstrate motivation and dedication to complete each level and proceed to the next.

Level 1 - Basic knowledge and introduction to a subject. Aim: Assess skills and motivation. 2018: 44 courses committed so far.

Level 2 - Longer courses, following the introductory course. Aim: Prepares for an entry level position in a company and to follow on to a technical course. 2018: 24 courses committed so far.

Level 3 - Vocational training course. Aim: attain a recognised professional qualification. 2018: 4 committed so far.

Level 4 - University degree - 15 students enrolled through scholarships or public universities.

AUGUST

Hotel Fasano

Our participant Pedro Henrique is employed at Hotel Fasano since July 2017, where he works as a chef’s assistant at the Italian restaurant Fasano al Mare. But only in May 2018 we were able to visit Pedro at the well-known hotel in Ipanema. He has been promoted three times since starting at the hotel and is well integrated in the team. We are immensely happy to see Pedro's achievements, his dedication and talent for cooking are being recognised. Continuing this way, and he has a promising future. We only got the permission to publish our visit at the hotel in August.

Igor Moreno, exhibiting art at CCBB

Dream Learn Work’s participant, Igor Moreno, with the artistic name IZY is exhibiting his art at the famous CCBB cultural centre, owned by Banco do Brasil (Brazilian Bank). The exhibition began on August, 14th and will last until December - simultaniasly as the Basquiat exhibition. Igor has been with Dream Learn Work since 2015, studying design and visual communication. This year he finished his vocational training in Visual Communication at SENAI Maracana. During these years he has also developed his own social project in Muquico, a slum area near his home, where he has been using art to develop the dreams of the people living in the neighbourhood. The UN has made a video about his project. His greatest passion is graffiti and street art. When he started our program his dream was to be able to make a living of his art, which he is now doing.

The future and I

DLW has asked several of our students about their thoughts on the future. In August we published the interview of Raissa from Complexo do Maré. She underlined the importance of educating the police better for the well-being of the slum areas and the honest people that lives within those areas: “When I think about the future, I think about how much I’d like that the military police not to exist or to be more prepared. Many problems happen nowadays in our society due to their lack of training; if they had a better preparation, it would be a big step already.’’ She also mentioned a bit about the current politics situation: ‘’In few words, I hope the future brings more democracy, health, education, resilience and empathy. I see a better future depending on who gets elected; if Bolsonaro wins, we won’t have any hope.”

SEPTEMBER

Visit at Cristo Redentor - organized by Intertouring

In September DLW organised an event with Intertouring, a local tourist agency to promote tourism as a area to build a career within. We had the opportunity to invite 20 students to have a guided-tour in the historical city center, a bus trip through Rio de Janeiro and a visit to Christ the Redeemer, one of the most famous tourist attraction in Rio. The tourism agency also arranged presentations of professionals working in the area and sharing their own experiences. All 20 participants had never been to Christ the Redeemer. The emotions and happiness was overwhelming to see.

NGO partners event

At DLW we believe in the power of shared knowledge. As we work in partnership with six social projects, DLW has started to organize meetings between all of our NGO partners. This initiative was created so we can learn from each other and improve our processes. In September we had our forth meeting, held at Projeto Grael in Niteroi. Another great event with our NGO partners.

Rio Oil and Gas

Together with Team Norway at the Norwegian pavilion Dream Learn Work participated at the huge Rio Oil and Gas fair. We were invited to share the stand with Innovation Norway so we could connect with new and old partners. Also, NBCC (Norwegian Brazilian Chamber of Commerce) invited us to their tradicional RIo Oil and Gas dinner where we had great opportunities to network within the oil and gas sector. The pavilion was officially opened by Norwegian Deputy Minister Ingvil Smines Tybring-Gjedde.
