At least 100 homes have been damaged after flooding caused by torrential rains swept through rural communities in the US state of Virginia. Each passing hour reports of the damage grow, as more than a dozen search-and-rescue teams canvass difficult-to-reach areas. GlobalGiving is working closely with our partners on the ground to get emergency support to impacted communities in this time of need.
Between July 11th and 12th, historic amounts of rain fell in Buchanan County, Virginia causing mass destruction and displacing hundreds of people. This flooding has also disrupted key power grids, leaving communities without the ability to communicate and destroying more than one hundred homes. Based on our experience, GlobalGiving has learned that it is vital to get funds to locally-led nonprofits that can respond to the community needs in both the short and long-term.
All donations to the Virginia Flood Relief Fund will support flood relief and recovery efforts in Virginia. Initially, the fund helps first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, medicine, and shelter. As needs emerge, we will support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations in the impacted area.
