Veterans Day and PTSD

By Maggie McNish | Production Assistant

In honor of this coming Veterans Day, 3 Generations will be releasing a short video about the trauma that veterans continue to face after returning home from activation or deployment. We focus on Lacie, a woman we met while in production of our newest feature film on the effects of legalizing marijuana. Lacie’s husband, Daniel, was an Army combat engineer who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, searching for explosives to protect his fellow soldiers on the frontlines.

Lacie talked to us about Daniel and how his transition back into civilian life has affected his mental and physical wellbeing, as well as how it has taken a toll on herself and their relationship. The PTSD that Daniel suffers through on a daily basis makes it hard for him to leave the house and fully function in society. Lacie shares that his flashbacks can get so intense that he often believes people are trying to kill him. Unfortunately, Daniel shares this struggle with countless veterans, and the his story helps to shed a light on how the federal government and the VA fails its troops.

Prescription medications and scarce opportunities for therapy did little to help Daniel; it even worsened some of his symptoms. Disillusioned by the subpar services provided by the VA, Daniel and Lacie turned to Colorado, where Daniel could receive cannabinoid treatment. Although he still has a long journey ahead of him, cannabis has given Daniel his life back. Yet, the VA continues to frown upon the use of cannabis in treating veterans with PTSD. Lacie considers this a crime against humanity, especially since it is soldiers like her husband that are fighting for the individual freedoms that America promises its citizens.

At 3 Generations, we will continue to support veterans from all walks of life, of all ages, and long after their time in the military. We will not judge nor discriminate against any soldier who may find healing in alternative forms of treatment. Every veteran should be celebrated and given help when they need it most.
