We have been recording veterans’ stories since 2011. Along with physical injury, vets deal with psychological trauma. To center more inspiring, intergenerational and intersectional veterans we are checking back in with one of our subjects and changemakers, J.R Martinez.
J.R is a U.S Army veteran, burn survivor, actor, motivational speaker, New York Times best-selling author, non-profit spokesperson and Dancing with the Stars season 13 contestant. We had the pleasure of interviewing him in the past, which you can view here.
Currently, J.R. travels the world as a motivational speaker, spreading his message of resilience and optimism. At a recent engagement J.R said “I feel very much like a survivor. I’m no longer a victim. The moment that something happened to me, I’m a victim. Every moment beyond that I’m alive, I’m a survivor and I’m learning how to thrive.” Besides inspiring and connecting with people around the world, J.R spends his free time “working out, acting and enjoying quality time with my friends and family”, proving that veterans can not only survive the traumas of war, but also thrive in the face of them.
At 3 Generations we have supported efforts to help veterans return to work, seek appropriate mental health support as needed and told the stories of veterans of earlier wars. To watch our interview with J.R and other stories of courageous veterans, please visit our website here and connect with us on social media at @3_generations.
