The UWC Costa Rica Sports and Cultural Festival took place on April 11th and it was a day full of fun, soccer, basketball, games, dances, songs, fashion and even Zumba. And it wouldn’t have been possible without you!
In the morning, 110 teenagers came together to compete in the Sports tournament in football soccer and basketball. In total 5 high schools participated: UWC Costa Rica, Berkley Academy (private school), Santa Ana High School (public school), Lincoln School (private school), and UP Valencia (public school). After a morning of matches and a final in the afternoon, the Santa Ana High School came out as the winner of both the basketball and football tournaments.
The afternoon saw us welcoming more than 100 guests from the surrounding Santa Ana community as well as other communities close to UWC Costa Rica to join our sports players and enjoy the cultural piece of the program.
Among these guests were 15 very special people that participated in the Festival: children from La Carpio -a slum in Costa Rica -who participate in an after-school service project throughout the school year with our students. For many of them this was the first time visiting our school, and they thoroughly enjoyed all that the Festival had to give! They jumped in the trampoline, laughed with our students while imagining what design they wanted to be painted in their face, and enjoyed helping to make their new balloon friends! When the time came for the cultural dances and performance, they not only learned that Nepal is a country but also enjoyed and cheered as they saw a dance from this far-away land. Through games and dances these children got to experience UWC and take stories of dances, songs, and new games home with them.
Because of your gifts we were able to fulfill our mission to become a force to unite people across socioeconomic divisions. Your donations we were able to purchase all the materials for the sports tournaments and in turn set the stage for a morning where a common passion to sports overshadowed the division between public and private schools. Your gifts allowed us to show the world through dance, song, and games to children from the most disadvantaged contexts in Costa Rica. Thank you for joining us in this journey and keep your eyes out for the 2019 UWC Sports and Cultural Festival!
