As you know, the Ombetja Yehinga Organisation (OYO) is a Namibian NGO that uses Arts to create social awareness. The beginning of the year has been better for OYO, as we could return to schools.
In particular, we could undertake the following projects:
1) ‘Gentlemen and supergirls’, with funding from the Embassy of Finland. This is a project that is looking at Gender-Based Violence with teenagers through new lenses. The OYO dance troupe visited schools, we organized two girls’ camps and two boys’ camps and we created a photo project with the young people involved.
2) ‘Growing strong in the ||Kharas region’, with funding from Horizon. This is a project working in and out of school, looking at substance abuse among teenagers. The OYO dance troupe visited schools, we trained the Karasburg youth group and toured them in schools.
3) ‘Break the cycle’, with funding from FNB Foundation. This is a project encouraging San learners who are in school to remain in school. The OYO dance troupe visited the schools and OYO will be working with a local San youth group from next month onwards.
During that period, we could also organize a public event at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre to present our program and launch the initiative 20 for 20. As OYO will turn 20 in December, we would like to encourage our friends and allies to donate $20 to support us.
While the beginning of the year has been better, we still have little visibility for the next few months. As we are arriving in winter and the number of COVID cases is steadily increasing, we are not sure what awaits us. Many funding applications are pending, and sadly some former partners indicated that this year they will redirect funding to Ukraine aid and support to immigrants. We totally appreciate this is a priority and stand together with the people of Ukraine. However, it a problem for us if we can’t manage to secure much needed funding. Especially since, as in many parts of the world, prices of petrol and basic commodities have dramatically increased. We have many requests from schools to go and work with them - we still don't have enough funding to answer positively to all those requests.
During that period of great need, we still count on you. At the beginning of the year, we received quite a few donations– some of which were very generous. We really do appreciate your support.
We can’t repeat enough how thankful we are to everybody who helped us in 2021 and at the beginning of 2022 – either through donations or by sharing our call for donation and promoting our organization. We know how difficult the last two years have been for you all – so your generosity is not going unnoticed. THANK YOU.
