A roof over our heads

By Margaret Grainger | Vice President

Taking the old roof off.
Taking the old roof off.

The repair of the hand to hand preschool roof is an absolute need to keep our children safe. We purchased the building many year ago from previous owners who had done many extensions and renovations. As they extended the house, they of course extended the roof too. This resulted in a roof that was engineered incorrectly. In addition to this, the building codes in Thailand are very lax which means during severe monsoonal rains the water simply cannot get away. Finally, the roof is 45 plus years old and the concrete and tiles have aged and are broken. Over the past 5 years we have spent considerable money trying to fix the issues and this did provide temporary solutions. The final straw was when the water started leaking inside our electrical box which put our children's lives at risk.

The project is more than simply taking old tiles off and replacing them with new ones. The whole roof structure has had to be taken off. When the builders began this step, they discovered that spray insulation has been applied under the roof, however this was very flammable and made the removal slow and dangerous.

It was also discovered that some of the internal wall had no reinforcing and they were unsafe. So, they were dismantled and rebuilt.

Finally, we are receiving many more children who are between the ages of 1year and 3 years old. We are making an early years safe too whilst doing the renovations so we can meet their needs too.

The cost of the project has increased and the time for completion has been extended as well, but the job needs to be done right for the safety of all. the new goal is $72 000 USD.

Any amount will help us out. Thanks for all your support.
