ActionAid's local partners in Myanmar are coordinating an immediate and urgent response following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28, 2025.
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025, with its epicenter located just 17 km from Mandalay, the country's second-largest city, home to approximately 1.5 million people. The tremor caused widespread devastation, with multiple buildings collapsing, roads blocked by debris, and critical infrastructure severely damaged. Over 1,002 deaths and 2,306 injuries have been reported, figures that are expected to rise as assessments and rescue efforts continue.
ActionAid's local partners are coordinating a rapid emergency response to reach those most affected as quickly as possible. In a country already facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced by conflict and instability, the scale of this tragedy is unprecedented. Working with our partners in the most affected areas, we are urgently assessing damage and will be supporting communities by meeting their short term emergency needs and building longer term programming.
Initial response activities will include meeting the immediate needs of the people affected by the earthquake with food packages, multi-purpose cash support, and dignity and hygiene kit distribution. This response will be followed by a recovery response which will cover shelter and WASH facility repair, and livelihood recovery. ActionAid has been working with local partners in Myanmar since 2006 providing humanitarian relief, tackling GBV, and enabling participation in democratic processes.
