Preserving Local African Languages Through AI

By Yassmine Eladib | International Media Manager

In Togo, West Africa, millions of people can't use digital services in their own language. For Justin, an orphaned student who grew up speaking Ewe, this wasn't just a problem, it was an obstacle to opportunity. Without technology that recognized his native language, access to education, healthcare, and government services remained out of reach for many in his community. But Justin was determined to change that.

Justin, an Ashinaga Africa Initiative (AAI) Alumnifrom Togo, grew up believing that AI and robotics were out of reach for Africa. The technology seemed too expensive, and the infrastructure too limited. But that changed when he had a realization that transformed his future, and with it, the future of millions in his community. When he got to university, he discovered affordable solutions that could be built now, in Africa, by Africans. He knew he had to act.

Justin’s journey was made possible through AAI’s entrepreneurship training, mentorship, and networking opportunities. The leadership skills he developed helped him launch his start up, Umbaji, which focuses on AI-powered solutions for local language preservation and accessibility. "AAI taught me how to lead, pitch my ideas, and work with people from different backgrounds. These skills were essential in bringing my vision to life," he says.

In 2022, Justin made history by developing the first-ever speech recognition model for Ewe, spoken in Togo and neighboring regions. This breakthrough means millions can access essential services in their native language. "Digitizing our languages is about accessibility and inclusion," he says.

But Justin didn’t stop there. He envisions AI transforming agriculture, water access, and education. "Imagine a farmer receiving real-time guidance in his local language through AI, helping him make informed decisions about fertilizers and crops. That’s the future we are building."

Thanks to donor support, AAI provides Scholars like Justin with the resources, mentorship, and training to turn ideas into impactful ventures. Your investment equips the next generation of African leaders to create sustainable solutions.

With growing government support for digital innovation in Togo, the time to invest in AI-driven solutions is now. Your support fuels the training that makes stories like Justin’s possible. Because of you, a future where technology serves all of Africa is within reach.
