The Journey Begins: Unleashing the Skills of 1,000 Global Problem Solvers

By Cait Goddard | Program Officer

Migrating from challenge to impact through innovation isn’t a linear, easy journey. It’s often messy, confusing, and characterized by moments of success followed by failures. More times than not, this journey requires individuals to make a series of tough decisions, often with insufficient information amidst complex factors. GKI’s first fundraiser focused on global problem solvers and the difficulties they face while tackling some of the world's greatest challenges. With your support through GlobalGiving, GKI has made great strides toward its goal of training and equipping 1,000 global problem solvers.

One of the main global challenges GKI is addressing through training global problem solvers is post-harvest food loss: the food that perishes between the farm and the point at which it would—in theory—reach a human’s plate). The Food and Agriculture Organization U.S. (FAO) has estimated that about 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted globally each year. In Africa, where crop production can contribute up to 70% of a household’s income, reducing food loss is one of the world’s most pressing issues.

To date, GKI has worked extensively to identify ways to reduce post-harvest food loss through its work with The Rockefeller Foundation, Thought For Food, and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa. We are working to develop resources and approaches to help individuals more easily identify, evaluate, select, and act on high-potential innovation opportunities. In 2016, we developed a toolset to support decision makers as they make choices along their innovation journey. This year, through the support of our donors, we are identifying ways to scale our Improved Innovation Decision-Making Toolset and offer in-person and online trainings. Once refined, our toolset will equip 1,000 global problem solvers with the tools and mindset to tackle the greatest challenges of both today and tomorrow.

Thank you for all of your support!
