Looking Forward

By Wendy De Leon | President & CEO

United Against Hunger began in April 2020 to address food insecurity in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. The need for food, both served meals and emergency food supplies (pantry bags), was growing exponentially, often doubling in a single week. Clearly, we had to find a solution to get more food to more people more quickly, so we hired furloughed food workers to help us meet the need. For sixteen months this model worked brilliantly.

In 2022, with gas prices soaring to over $4 per gallon, families were once again making difficult choices—pay bills or purchase the food they need to feed the family this week. United Way of Southern Cameron County, alongside its dedicated partners, sprang into action to ensure that families and individuals had access to nourishing meals.

Fast forward to 2023, our commitment to creating sustainable change has led us to a pivotal juncture. We understand that providing immediate relief, though crucial, is not enough to break the cycle of food insecurity. We will continue to take swift action when needed, but we are switching gears and embarking on a strategic journey, pivoting our focus towards collaboration with key partners. By aligning our efforts, expertise, and resources, we're poised to implement innovative, long-term solutions that will lead to a food – secure future, for all.

This transformation cannot take place without the invaluable role you play as a supporter and advocate. Your dedication has been the driving force behind every meal provided, every family assisted, and every step taken toward our shared vision. As we transition toward long-term solutions, your contributions continue to be the cornerstone of our progress. Together, we're sowing the seeds of sustainable change and nurturing a community where no one has to worry about where their next meal will come from. Stay tuned!
