For most of us there is much to be thankful for as we begin the brand new year. COVID 19 levels have dropped, employment numbers have risen, and our kids are back in the classroom. Things look much brighter than when we began 2021 and 2022, but food insecurity continues to plague families in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
Food insecurity and poverty go hand in hand here in one of the poorest counties in the United States. Wages and benefits are not keeping pace with inflation, and sticker shock at the grocery store has left many families wondering how they will put food on the table. Even our local food bank, our primary partner in United Against Hunger, has felt the impact current economic conditions. Donations of money and product have plummeted, and our once bountiful food distributions have shrunk as the food bank works to ensure their available product stretches to cover their very large service area.
Because of food shortages from the food bank and because the Rio Grande Valley is a winter garden (our crops are normally harvested during the winter months), we have partnered with local farmers to purchase produce to supplement the food we receive from the Food Bank of the RGV. Families in need receive not only pantry staples, but healthy fruits and vegetables in their semi-monthly food distributions. Your gift helps us pay the farmers for this extra food--helping them and helping families have access to beautiful fresh produce that would otherwise be out of their reach.
Thank you for helping us feed the hungry. It's important work, and we can't do it without you.
