Nadin, pictured here, is a third-year Leader in Training (LIT) from Arrabe in Israel. She volunteered to co-lead a Hat Tournament. Nadin’s beautiful write-up showcases two important aspects of Ultimate Peace that our donors make possible – our year-round program that brings UP coaches to 20+ communities throughout the region for regular ultimate practices; and our three-year LIT program that develops future leaders of Ultimate Peace and of the communities in which they reside.
“We had our first 2017 Ultimate Peace event on the 6th of January, a UP Hat Tournament. The tournament took place in Daburiya, an Arab village in the north of Israel, and kids from all UP communities in Israel joined in.
UP teaches five values – integrity, non-violence, friendship, mutual respect, and fun. Our value to focus on in this tournament was Friendship. We wanted UP kids in our first event to meet their friends from camp and other communities, and to make new ones.
We started the event with instructions to both kids and staff, and then we divided kids to teams considering age and gender. Coaches and kids followed the schedule we put before them, devoting time for team activities, ultimate games, breaks, and free time.
As a third year LIT, being involved in the preparations for the Hat tournament with Scott (the leader of the year-round program), gave me experience and self-confidence for running the next tournament by myself! I will apply the things I liked during the first tournament to our next event, such as me and Scott walking around the fields and seeing the coaches to make sure everything is going ok so far … I’ll also try to improve thing I didn't like, considering the feedback we took after the tournament from the staff."
Hats off to Nadin! This was a big undertaking and she led the event magnificently. And hats off to our donors who provide the support we need to run the year-round and LIT programs. We will provide periodic updates so you can learn even more about our organization and the amazing kids that participate in it.
