From Passion to Helping the Planet

By Suzan Abu Farha | Entrepreneurship Program Director

Hiba, also known as Om Habeeb, is a remarkable 33-year-old mother of four children who is turning her passion for the environment into a successful business venture in plastic recycling. Her love for the planet led her to start her own business in plastic recycling, and that's where her story begins.

In 2012, Om Habeeb, with the support of her husband, invested $3,000 in a Plastic Crusher Machine. It was the primary machine for their plastic recycling unit, which crushed plastic into small pellets to be sold to factories that manufacture plastic products like chairs and irrigation screws. Om Habeeb's small plant grew, and she employed two workers to help her collect plastic like broken chairs and bottles, and wash, dry, crush, and package the plastic to sell to manufacturers. She created a network of suppliers to separate out plastic and bring it to her plant.

However, when the pandemic hit, everything stopped, and on April 2020 the plant burned down due to an electrical fault. They lost almost everything. Despite this setback, Om Habeeb and her team persisted and found a way to reopen the plant. They rented a larger land, moved the plant to it, and borrowed $3,000 to cover the electricity cost.

As a business owner, Om Habeeb realized that she needed more skills to keep her business afloat. That's when she discovered Tomorrow's Youth Organization's Entrepreneurship Intensive Training program. She seized the opportunity to join the program and learned more about business management, finances, fundraising, operations, and human resources.

With the newfound knowledge and skills from the program, Om Habeeb is now ready to pitch her business to potentially win seed funding of $10,000 to rehabilitate the plant and buy the necessary machine. "This is a big opportunity for me," says Om Habeeb. "I am always looking to talk about my enterprise for awareness purposes, and I felt the gap I have in the management skills."

TYO's work with marginalized people and their belief in the power of women in all sectors has been instrumental in Om Habeeb's success. Their support has enabled her to grow her business and provide for her family. TYO is making a significant impact in the lives of people like Om Habeeb and is changing their lives for the better.

Om Habeeb's story is a testament to the resilience and perseverance of entrepreneurs in the face of adversity. With the right support and training, women like her can succeed in the business world, create a better future for themselves and their families, and contribute to the growth and development of their communities, and the planet.
