GlobalGiving makes first Turkey relief disbursement

By Britt Lake | Director of Programs, GlobalGiving

All of us at GlobalGiving were saddened to wake up on October 23 to the news that an earthquake had hit Turkey’s Van province, causing extensive damage and injury.  Over the past two weeks, we have been heartened to see the generosity of over 2,000 individuals who have given their time and money to support GlobalGiving’s earthquake relief fund in Turkey.  We are committed to letting you know how your donations are being spent and the impact those funds are having on families in the affected area.

On Wednesday, November 2, ten days after an earthquake that killed close to 600 people and injured and displaced thousands more, GlobalGiving made its first disbursement of $72,000 to organizations working on the relief efforts in the affected areas.  You can see the exact allocation and how the funds will be used below.

Turkish Philanthropy Funds - $36,000: 100% of these funds will be used to support AKUT and Kizilay in their immediate relief efforts:

  • AKUT: AKUT supports search and rescue efforts in the immediate days after an earthquake or other disaster.  Your support will help to provide long-term investments in equipment so that AKUT can respond quickly in future disasters.
  • Kizilay: These funds are going to support building of container homes in Van as a longer-term solution to tents, where many survivors are currently housed.  These homes cost 8500TL (about $4500) each.

Save the Children - $18,000: These funds will help deliver thousands of winterized family tents, transitional shelter units, blankets, sleeping bags and other essential items to individuals in the earthquake-affected area.

Fuel Relief Fund - $18,000: This earthquake has left survivors without electricity or heating.  These funds will go entirely to provide free fuel for distribution to non-profits working in the area and families that must endure cold temperatures.

We will continue to send updates on how these funds are being used and how they are helping survivors in Turkey to rebuild their lives.  We welcome any comments and questions and thank you again for your support.

Kind wishes,

Britt and the GlobalGiving team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
