Challenge

Young people in the region are often pushed into dangerous situations, including forced labor, recruitment by armed groups, and homelessness. They face severe poverty, lack of employment opportunities, and acute malnutrition, while displacement continues to rise. These challenges leave many youth vulnerable, leading to an increase in street children, theft, banditry, child soldier recruitment, and exploitation in mines. The TUMIKA KIJANA Project empowers 350 youth in Ituri by addressing unemployment and promoting peace. Key activities include: 1) Providing mentorship to build leadership and entrepreneurial skills, 2) Supporting youth clubs with income-generating activities (e.g., agriculture, small trades), 3) Offering materials and small funding for club initiatives, 4) Assisting in the shipment of products to broader markets, and 5) Integrating youth into Village Savings and Credit Associations

Long-Term Impact

The TUMIKA KIJANA Project will empower 350 youth, organized into 14 clubs across 5 territories, including Bunia, to become self-sustaining and reduce conflict in Ituri. Activities include: 1) Promoting self-sufficiency among youth, 2) Hosting workshops with local authorities, 3) Training in income-generating activities, 4) Ensuring food security, 5) Sustaining production and self-care, and 6) Reducing unemployment and gender-based violence (GBV) and child exploitation (EAS).
