This past July, families in Louisiana braced for another potentially-deadly storm. We are relieved that Hurricane Barry proved not to be as severe and damaging as initially predicted. Briefly touching down in Louisiana as a category 1 Hurricane, it quickly transitioned to a tropical storm. Although Hurricane Barry brought heavy rains to New Orleans, the local community, with support from GlobalGiving partners, was well prepared to respond to its impact.
With generous support from GlobalGivers like you, the Committee for a Better New Orleans (CBNO) will continue implementing the New Orleans Community Participation Program, a permanent, accessible, community-based structure for civic engagement. The Hurricane Katrina recovery process revealed stark inequities in neighborhood representation as well as a lack of tools by city officials to collect community feedback. The Committee for a Better New Orleans is creating frameworks and formal structures for civic engagement and mutual collaboration between residents, neighborhoods, businesses, and government.
Strengthening disaster preparedness, mitigation and resilience is key for New Orleans- an area vulnerable to disasters and where communities are still recovering 14 years after Hurricane Katrina.
