Two years ago, Leonard and his family arrived in Greece after fleeing hardship in Sierra Leone. At just 12 years old, Leonard now lives in the refugee camp of Schisto—yet, despite the uncertainty of displacement, his life is being transformed in extraordinary ways through the power of music.
Leonard is a student of El Sistema Greece, where he takes part in both choir and viola classes at the refugee camp. His commitment is unwavering, his talent undeniable. But last year, Leonard’s story took an inspiring turn that would forever shape his sense of possibility.
Leonard was selected to participate in EDEN, a global music project led by Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato. As one of the choir members, Leonard performed in the filming of EDEN in the ancient city of Olympia, Greece—a place symbolic of human excellence and unity. For Leonard, it was the first time he had ever left the camp for several days. Suddenly, he found himself not only immersed in a professional music production but also collaborating with young choir students from across the world.
Being part of such a monumental project was nothing short of life-changing for him. Under the mentorship of Joyce DiDonato and alongside fellow young artists, Leonard didn’t just sing—he flourished. He discovered new dimensions of his own potential, gained confidence, and experienced a sense of belonging that transcended borders.
Fast forward one year, and Leonard’s journey with EDEN came full circle. At the prestigious Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall, EDEN had its grand premiere. Leonard once again stepped onto the stage—this time in front of a live audience—performing the same song he had recorded during the Olympia filming. He was reunited with the friends and fellow choir members from the project, beaming with joy and pride. For Leonard, this was more than a performance; it was a defining moment of growth, empowerment, and hope.
Through El Sistema Greece, Leonard’s passion for music has become a pathway to transformation. He is a musician, a performer, and a part of something far greater.
Leonard’s story is just one example of how music can open doors where none seemed to exist. From a refugee camp to the stage of an international concert hall, his journey shows what’s possible when talent meets opportunity. With your support, we can continue to nurture the potential of children like Leonard—giving them not only a voice, but a future filled with hope, dignity, and possibility. Together, we are opening doors, building dreams, and creating opportunities for children like Leonard to shine.
