Equipping Survivors for Independent Living Through Skills and Mentorship

By Miriam Kariuki | Project Coordinator

Transitioning survivors into independent living remains a core focus of our work. This quarter, we welcomed new survivors to the shelter while continuing to support those preparing to leave. Through our ongoing vocational training programs, survivors continue to gain valuable skills in baking, soap-making, tailoring, beadwork, and farming/Permaculture.These skills empower them with practical knowledge that can be used to generate income and build financial independence once they transition from the shelter.

A key highlight of this quarter has been the encouragement and inspiration provided by survivors who are preparing to transition. Their resilience and progress have served as a powerful source of motivation for newly arrived survivors, offering them hope and a vision of what is possible with dedication and support. Seeing others successfully move toward independent living strengthens the determination of new survivors to actively engage in skill-building and personal growth.

We have also strengthened our post-shelter support system, ensuring that survivors receive continued guidance after leaving the shelter. This includes business coaching, and follow-up visits to assess their progress. As part of this initiative, we are actively seeking grants to support the transition of survivors back into the community, including funding for seed grants to help them launch small businesses as they rebuild their lives.
